Definition of Leukonychia

  1. Leukonychia is a complete or partial whitening (spots) of the natural nail plate; usually caused by external trauma or physical damage, but other medical conditions may be responsible. When the white discoloration is present as small white spots or dots, it is known as “Leukonychia Punctata”. Usually caused from trauma to the nail. Leukonychia may also be an early sign of fungal infection.
